The Foreign Ministers of Türkiye and the Russian Federation held talks on a grain agreement. Türkiye intends to extend the deal up to 120 days.

Foreign Ministers of Russia and Türkiye Sergey Lavrov and Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu held telephone conversation. The parties discussed the grain deal.

"During the meeting, the Istanbul agreement on grain and bilateral relations were discussed," the press service of the Turkish Foreign Ministry informed.

Grain deal to be extended up to 120 days

Earlier Wednesday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that the goal of the ongoing negotiations is to extend the grain agreement by four months.

The Russian side, due to the lack of progress in the supply of Russian food and fertilizers, decided to extend the agreement for only two months.

“Our friends held talks with the Russian and Ukrainian sides, negotiations at the technical level, and we continue meetings at the ministerial level,”

he said.

Akar noted that as part of the deal, more than 24 mn tons of grain have been delivered to date.

The head of the Turkish Defense Ministry also noted that the deal is of extreme importance for both regional and international peace. The deal helped to stabilize prices, Akar noted.

“It is important to prolong the deal. Instead of a 60-day extension, we are negotiating a 120-day extension”

Akar presented the position of the Turkish side.
