Moscow expects a move from Washington towards giving up plans on creating a missile defense shield in Europe after a deal on Iran’s nuclear program has been reached, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
Commenting on the final agreement, the minister recalled that in April 2009 in Prague US President Barack Obama said that "if the Iran nuclear program issue is sorted out, then the task of creating the European segment of the missile defense system will disappear." "That’s why we drew the attention of our American colleagues to this fact today and we will expect a reaction," TASS cited Lavrov as saying.
"No doubt, finding the solution will play an important role in the cause of strengthening the non-proliferation regime in general ... It will no doubt have a healthful influence on the overall situation in the Middle East, the north of Africa and the Persian Gulf. Third, of course, reaching this agreement will allow approaching other problems that exist in the region," the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
