The expiry of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty meant Europe was losing part of its security, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said.
In a statement, he said that Germany regrets that the INF treaty wasn't saved.
"With the end of the INF treaty, Europe is losing part of its security. I am convinced that today we must again succeed in agreeing rules on disarmament and arms control in order to prevent a new nuclear arms race," Deutsche Welle cited Maas as saying.
The German Foreign Minister called on Russia and the U.S. to safeguard the last major arms control deal between their two countries, which is set to run out in 2021. The New START treaty was signed in 2010 to curb strategic nuclear missiles, and can be extended for five years if both parties agree.
