French President Emmanuel Macron has been discussing the possibility of resigning in case he obtained poor results in upcoming snap elections, Europe 1 radio reported.
Earlier, the French leader said he was dissolving the National Assembly and calling a snap legislative election after his party suffered a heavy defeat in elections for the European Parliament.
"I am therefore dissolving the National Assembly.” The vote will take place in two rounds on June 30 and July 7," Macron said.
In the face of the far right’s crushing victory at the European elections, Macron called the election because he otherwise feared the results would lead to paralysis in the legislature and leave him a lame duck leader three years before the next presidential election in 2027.
Emmanuel Macron was sworn in for a second term on May 7, 2022.
