Russia is ready to follow the path of restoration of diplomatic relations with Georgia and supports such initiatives from Tbilisi, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, answering the question from Vestnik Kavkaza correspondent on Wednesday.

In the first place, Maria Zakharova recalled that the severance of diplomatic relations is a legacy of Georgia's previous regime.

“Russia was not responsible for severing ties with Georgia, this happened on the initiative of the Mikheil Saakashvili regime. Since then, the restoration of bilateral relations has been subject to conditions conflicting with the existing realities in the region,” she said.

According to the diplomat, once Moscow has already agreed to peaceful Tbilisi initiatives.

“Back in 2012, the Georgian authorities suggested to launch the process of normalizing bilateral relations - it was immediately supportedby Russia," Maria Zakharova said.

The diplomat stressed that Moscow continues to believe that this normalization of relations is in the interest of our two nations.

"Therefore, we support any initiatives that support Russian-Georgian normalization. In this context, we welcome the mentioned initiative. We are ready to follow this path," Maria Zakharova concluded.
