Maria Zakharova, official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, said during a weekly briefing that sanctions pressure has become a huge factor in modern international relations.
"It definitely didn't come from diplomacy's arsenal, and it definitely should not be the basis of international politics. This leads to huge consequences: to erosion of international law, to erosion of civilized forms of communication," she said, answering the question of Vestnik Kavkaza about Russia's view on introduction of EU sanctions against Turkey.
"In fact, one way or another, sanctions lead to un-humanization of diplomatic processes, countries are getting weaker, just like nations. People don't understand why they are being punished in this way. People understand when negotiations are underway, when parties can find mutually acceptable solutions, when something may turn out to be more resourceful," Maria Zakharova continued.
She also recalled that modern financial and economic power of the EU countries comes from the era of colonialism. "We know the history of how this economic and financial power was achieved by some European countries, in particular EU's leading countries. They achieved it at the expense of those countries, peoples and continents that formed their financial and economic base. Why this power should be used again those countries and peoples that helped the EU to achieve it? I just can't wrap my head around this," she said.
