The EU should take a more active part in the work of the OSCE Minsk Group to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This opinion was expressed in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza by the well-known US diplomat, the former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Matthew Bryza, who commented on the statement by the EU on the inadmissibility of the status quo in this matter.
‘’The EU statement that the status quo, which is preserved in Nagorno-Karabakh, is unacceptable, reflects the concern of Azerbaijan that Armenia does not participate in the negotiation process, as it is satisfied with the military situation in the region. At the same time, the call for restraint has outlined the concerns of Armenia over the fact that Azerbaijan may try to change the military situation, which in turn disturbs Yerevan," he said.
The diplomat reminded that the EU expressed its readiness to act as a mediator in the negotiating process under the leadership of the OSCE, in particular in the restoration of the status of the territories of Azerbaijan, which on the basis of the agreement must be returned to Azerbaijan. He said that this was the initial position of the EU.
"As for my position, I have long advocated for the EU to play a more significant role in the Minsk Group, since I believe that this participation will give more importance to the negotiation process," Bryza concluded.
