It is possible that US President Donald Trump will demonstrate political will to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the former US Assistant Secretary for the South Caucasus, former US ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza said, speaking at the international conference titled 'South Caucasus in the international arena: Cooperation and competition in the region and its vicinity'.
He recalled that Trump, in fact, has no experience in foreign policy. "Trump himself was surprised at his victory in the elections. He said that he run in the presidential race accidentally. Trump has no plans for foreign policy, has no certainty. And it is bad for everyone," the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza cited Bryza as saying.
The US diplomat noted that it's not true that there has been no progress in the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict over the past 20 years.
"It's unlikely that Trump will demonstrate political will in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict, but still he can do it," the former US ambassador said.
He specified that regional projects in the Caspian region have never been among the strategic interests of the US. "Our main goal was stability, the development of democratic values in the countries of the South Caucasus. It caused the support of energy projects in the Caucasus. So the US tried to ensure that Azerbaijan supplied its oil to foreign markets. Turkey's interest, which tried to become an energy hub, was taken into account as well," Matthew Bryza added.
The conference is dedicated to the 5th anniversary of Caucasus International magazine.
