The speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, explained the cause of the upper house of parliament's approval of the use of the Russian Air Force in Syria. According to her, the Federation Council proceeded from the need to avoid the "spread" of Islamic State.
"The senators have taken this decision because it is in the interests of the national security of Russia for many reasons," Matviyenko said. She added that "if today this hydra is not crushed at its roots, where it is already at war, IS could come to threaten the entire world, including Europe and Russia."
"We cannot stay away from fighting this great evil," Interfax cited the head of the Federation Council as saying.
