Russian President Vladimir Putin put forward Dmitry Medvedev for the post of prime minister, the Kremlin said in a statement on its website.
Medvedev, who had been prime minister since 2012, resigned earlier on Monday along with the rest of the Russian government in accordance with the Constitution after the inauguration of newly-elected President Vladimir Putin.
The Constitution requires the head of state should propose a candidate for premiership within two weeks following the resignation of the previous cabinet. The State Duma )lower house of parliament) is obliged to make a decision within a week.
The President of the Minchenko Consulting Communication Group, Yevgeny Minchenko, speaking to Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that the scenario under which Dmitry Medvedev is appointed as prime minister was the base one. "Everyone was like 99% sure that Medvedev will be new prime minister. Now we need to follow the Cabinet composition developments. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about the role of vice-PMs. There will be intrigue until the structure and composition of the Cabinet are announced," he said.
"Moreover, we can expect more large-scale changes, including innovations in the presidential administration and in the management of large state corporations, may be there will be reshuffle in the governor's corps. In any case, it is highly probable that tomorrow we we'll find out what the new government will be like. From what I heard yesterday and today, the composition of the Cabinet was approved by Putin and Medvedev a week ago," Yevgeny Minchenko said.
The director of the Institute of Political Studies Sergei Markov, linked Dmitry Medvedev's reappointment to the fact that Vladimir Putin is pleased with his work. "Medvedev works 12 hours a day, has no political ambitions, and it is very beneficial for Putin to have a man at the head of the government who will not pretend to be Putin's rival. It's his main function, it seems to me," he said.
In addition, Dmitry Medvedev can become the very figure that Vladimir Putin will put responsible for implementing the high-tech aspects of his election program. "Medvedev is known as a man who is keen on high-tech gadgets. In terms of the technological breakthrough announced by the president, this is also very important for heading the relevant state structures," Sergey Markov concluded .
