Meeting of Council of CIS Heads of State being held in Ashgabat

The meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, is being held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

The CIS leaders will review the documents aimed at developing economic cooperation, foreign policy partnership, ensuring security and countering new challenges and threats will be considered at the meeting. In particular, a draft Declaration on strategic economic cooperation of the CIS will be presented. They will specifically focus on the upcoming joint celebrations of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War in 2020 and will adopt an address to the CIS nations and the international community.

The agenda includes the signing of multilateral documents, including the Declaration of Strategic Economic Cooperation of the CIS Member States and the coordination of personnel and organisational decisions.

The heads of state will also decide to hold a regular meeting on October 16 in Tashkent, and will choose the future Chairman of the Commonwealth.

In addition to Russian and Azerbaijani leaders and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the summit will be attended by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Moldovan President Igor Dodon, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirzioyev.

The Russian delegation in Ashgabad includes Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Chief of the Government Staff Konstantin Chuychenko, Russian Economic Development Minister Maksim Oreshkin, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov and Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov.
