First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Mehriban Aliyeva, and Vice-President of the Foundation, founder and head of the Public Association IDEA, Leyla Aliyeva, attended the 21st UN Conference on Climate Change, held in Paris.
They toured the pavilions, opened by different countries which sent their representatives to the French capital, then attended the event on the topic 'Innovative approaches to low-carbon development and climate stability', organized in the framework of the conference by the Regional Centre for Environmental Protection for Europe, which was dedicated to achieving sustainable development in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, as well as measures taken for the protection of the environment.
Leyla Aliyeva was among the speakers.
In her speech, she touched upon urgent environmental problems, faced by humanity, suggested ways of solving them, particularly stressing that the moral duty of the international community before the future generations is to create conditions for the life and development of ecosystems, rare species of flora and fauna. According to the vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, this goal is achievable. In this regard, she noted that the main source of environmental degradation is negative human activity.
"There is nothing more valuable and delightful than nature. Nature does not belong to anyone. It is given to us, and our duty is to pass it on to future generations. We must work together to find new solutions to protect the environment. No country can solve this problem alone," Trend quoted her as saying.
Leyla Aliyeva informed the participants of the event about IDEA. "The Public Union IDEA - International Dialogue for Environmental Action. The organization was established 4 years ago in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is a country with ancient traditions and a rich history. Located at the crossroads of East and West, Azerbaijan is also a land of mountains with snow-capped peaks, rivers, lakes, large forests, meadows and pastures. Azerbaijan has 9 out of 11 existing climate zones. It gives our country a rich biodiversity. The main objective of IDEA is to encourage the younger generation both in the country and abroad to protect the environment," she said.
The head of IDEA stressed that environmental threats have no borders, and no country is insured from this danger, so it is important to coordinate the activities of the international community.
Leyla Aliyeva gave detailed information to the participants on the favorable geographical position, nature, rich flora and fauna, as well as favorable climatic conditions of Azerbaijan. In this context, she spoke about the work carried out in Azerbaijan in the sphere of nature and environmental protection, noting that there has been progress. In her speech, she also spoke about the activities of the public association IDEA, including achievements in the elimination of the environmental problems in the country and region, the preservation of biodiversity, promotion of sustainable development, promotion of the humane treatment of animals in our society, expansion of the awareness of young people about the environment and other areas.
Informing that recently she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN - FAO, Leyla Aliyeva spoke about the projects implemented on the line of IDEA. She noted that one of the main activities of the organization over the last two years is to protect endangered species.
"In Azerbaijan, we have created the 'Caucasian five'. They are brown bear, eagle, gray wolf, goitred gazelle and Caucasian leopard. One of the main goals of our organization is the sustainable protection of these species, which faced the threat of extinction. Over the past few years we have been working on ways of releasing goitred gazelles into the wild in our region, in Baku we organized the first summit on the biodiversity of the Caucasus, the purpose of which was to prevent the extinction of the Caucasian leopard after the tiger. We started the cooperation with the Fund Blue Marine for the project of sturgeon breeding and release of them into the Caspian Sea. It will be a very interesting project. Our main objective is the protection of these wonderful animals. No matter how many technological companies we may create, no matter how many historical monuments and cultural artifacts we may find, nothing could be more beautiful and sacred than nature. Nature has a healing power, and it gives us it gratuitously. Anyone can make a contribution to helping protect nature and our planet. Every little step can help to change for the better," she summed up.
