High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini had a phone call conversation with the new United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, at the start of his mandate.
The High Representative reiterated the continued full support of the European Union for the Geneva UN-led peace process for Syria.
The sides touched upon the modalities through which the European Union can support this process, including in the run up to the Brussels III Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region in spring. Mogherini mentioned in this context the important role that Syrian civil society and women's platforms play for the future of Syria.
The High Representative invited Pedersen to Brussels at his earliest opportunity and they agreed to stay in close contact.
