As of March 20, 50.1 thousand people died in Türkiye as a result of a powerful earthquake.

The earthquake that rocked Türkiye on February 6 killed 50,096 people, Yunus Sezer, head of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), said.

He added that the number of victims exceeded the number of people died by more than two times. It is currently 107,204 people.

The natural disaster struck southeast Türkiye early Monday morning, six weeks ago. The damage is assessed in 11 Turkish provinces, as well as in Syria. The strength of the tremors was 7,7 and 7,6 points, which led to large-scale destruction: entire cities were razed to the ground, and rescuers worked for days to get the survivors out of the rubble as soon as possible.

The aftershocks are still taking place. Seismic activity in the region scares away tourists from Türkiye. It threatens cause large losses for both the tourism industry and the country's economy as a whole. Türkiye wants to introduce earthquake resistance certificates for hotels to prove the safety of the holiday.
