Muslims of the world and in Russia celebrate main holiday

Today, Muslims around the globe and in Russia celebrate the main Islamic holiday - Eid al-Adha.

On this day, every Muslim, if possible, should bring a sacrifice. A sheep is enough for one person, a cow - for a group of 10 people. The animal must be healthy and young. The Muslim keeps a third of the sacrifice for himself and gives the rest as alms.

Eid al-Adha is a symbol of Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to God. To prove his obedience, he was once ready to sacrifice his son. However, making sure that the prophet overcame the test, the Almighty stopped Ibrahim's hand raised above his son and sent a white lamb instead.

Important attributes of the holiday are new or better clothes, visiting the graves of beloved ones and giving gifts. The holiday is the culmination of the Muslim pilgrimage to the holy places of Mecca and Medina. About a million pilgrims gather in Saudi Arabia’s cities.

About 300,000 Muslims are expected to attend the holiday prayer this morning in Moscow, and another 200,000 in the Moscow region. In total, over 14 mln adherents of Islam live in Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Muslims on the main holiday.

“Marking the end of the pilgrimage to the ancient Islamic shrines, Eid al-Adha carries a deep moral and spiritual meaning, serves to unite people, and preserves the enduring values of love, kindness and mercy. It is gratifying that the Muslim community of Russia actively participates in the country's life, and pays tireless attention to the implementation of large-scale charitable, educational, and enlightenment initiatives, educating the younger generation in respect for the traditions and customs of their ancestors. And of course, these activities are essential for maintaining international peace and harmony in society. I wish you health, success, happiness and prosperity,” the message of the head of state reads.
