Negotiations between Putin and Sargsyan: view from Armenia

A meeting between Russian and Armenian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Serzh Sargsyan has recently taken place in Moscow. The main topics were issues of bilateral cooperation, as well as the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The head of the parliamentary faction of the opposition party Armenian National Congress (ANC) Levon Zurabyan told Vestnik Kavkaza about the results of the event.

Above all, the politician said that the meeting between the presidents of Russia and Armenia completed the cycle of Vladimir Putin's meetings with the heads of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and Iran, noting there is an active search for opportunities to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. "The fact is that the geography of these meetings extends. It shows that the diplomatic process is quite serious,’’ he pointed out.

The talks with Russian and Turkish presidents, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, took place on Tuesday, August 9, at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg. On August 8 Baku hosted the first trilateral meeting of Presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, where the parties signed a joint declaration.

The head of the parliamentary faction also noted that today the Armenian society has disagreements about the ways to settle the conflict.

"They exist and they will exist as long as the Karabakh conflict is active. It cannot be otherwise. This is a very hard problem. It is painful both for Armenia and Azerbaijan. For example, the Palestinian issue is painful for both Israelis and Palestinians. Such conflicts always cause great debates in any society. These debates on possible ways to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, possible and impossible concessions will go on until a solution to this problem is found," the head of the parliamentary faction said.

In conclusion he pointed out that the unresolved conflict has a negative impact on the Armenian economy, as there is still a blockade by Azerbaijan and Turkey in place.
