Netanyahu: misconduct allegations are ‘persecution’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled allegations of his misconduct in office as “persecution” and repeated that a new criminal investigation into his affairs would come to nothing.

Police are exploring whether Netanyahu received unlawful gifts while serving in elected office, Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit said, outlining a criminal probe but giving few further details. His statement came after investigators questioned Netanyahu at his official residence for three hours earlier that day, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Mandelblit also said a separate investigation into four previous allegations of corruption had been closed without any charge or proof of misconduct on behalf of the Israeli leader.

“Long years of daily persecution against me and my family were proved yesterday to be nothing—nothing,” Netanyahu said on his official Twitter account. “I repeat: there will be nothing - because there is nothing.”

Netanyahu and his family have been the subject of previous allegations of corruption, which they have repeatedly denied.
