Nine contenders file documents to be registered as Kazakhstan's presidential candidates

Nine people have filed documents with Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) to be registered as candidates for president at the June 9 elections, CEC Deputy Chairman Konstantin Petrov said.

"Summing up the results of the nomination stage, nine republican associations, including four political parties, have filed required documents with the Central Election Commission," TASS cited Petrov as saying.

Sunday was the last day when Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission received registration documents from contenders. Four out of the nine contenders were nominated by parties. They are incumbent President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev who was nominated by the ruling Nur Otan party, member of the lower parliament house Daniya Yespayeva who was nominated by the Ak Zhol party, another member of the lower parliament house Jambyl Akhmetbekov who was nominated by the Communist People’s Party of Kazakhstan, board chairman of the National Agrarian Research and Educational Center Toleutai Rakhimbekov who was nominated by the Auyl People’s Democtratic Patriotic Party.

The other five were nominated by public associations. They are journalist Amirjan Kosanov (Ult Tagdyry National Patriotic Movement Association), writer Sadybek Tugel (Uly Dala Kyrandary Republican Movement), trade union leader Amangeldy Taspikhov (Federation of Kazakh Trade Unions), Talgat Yergaliyev (Union of Builders of Kazakhstan association of legal entities), and Jumatai Aliyev (Khalyk Demografiyasy public association).

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev appointed early presidential elections on June 9. Nomination of candidates began on April 10 to be over on April 28. Each candidate is now to raise more than 118,000 signatures of voters in his or her support. Registration of candidates will be over by May 11 to be followed by a canvassing stage till June 8.
