Osman Jan: Turkey and Russia understand each other

Their own visions of global political processes, not similar to the Western one, allow Russia and Turkey to understand each other, making a joint contribution to solving the existing problems in the region, a member of the Venice Commission, Professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Marmara, Osman Jan, said yesterday in an interview with a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza on the sidelines of the International Round Table "Topical international legal problems of the XXI century", organized by the State Duma and the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"In fact, neither Russia nor Turkey are typical European countries – they have their own history and their own position, which is especially evident in regional issues, particularly in the Caucasus. We can see that the countries of Europe do not really understand what happens in Turkey and Russia. Meanwhile, we have the same problems associated with religion, similar problems in relations with European countries, with the European Union, that is, we are very similar to each other," Osman Jan noted.

The member of the Venice Commission noted that this is one indication of how Turkey is sympathetic to issues of great importance for Russia. "Although, as you know, Turkey has recently held parliamentary elections which changed the balance of power in domestic policy, I am convinced that our relations, which are developing historically, will not deteriorate as a result of that. We are neighbors in the region, and we have only one course – to develop cooperation," he concluded.
