Four contenders for the post of Kazakhstan’s president started collecting signatures on Sunday following an approval from the country’s Central Election Commission (CEC), Deputy Chairman Konstantin Petrov said.
"Four contenders, whose compliance with the requirements was established by the CEC, are now collecting signatures for their support. They need to collect 118,140 valid signatures in at least 12 regions, cities of republican importance and the capital. Other candidates will be checked for compliance within the next few days," TASS cited Petrov as saying.
Apart from collecting the required number of signatures, the candidates will have to present a medical certificate and to make a report to local authorities about their income and property as of April 1.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev appointed early presidential elections on June 9. Nomination of candidates began on April 10 and ended on April 28. The registration of candidates will be over by May 11 to be followed by a canvassing stage till June 8.
