US Defense Secretary Ash Carter called on Turkey to stop shooting at Syrian Democratic Forces and retreat to agreed-upon geographical boundaries designed to keep the two sides apart.
"We have called upon Turkey to stay focused on the fight against Daesh and not to engage Syrian Democratic Forces. We do understand that they have historical differences with one another, but American interests are quite clear. We, like they, want to combat Daesh," Carter said at a Pentagon news conference.
Carter added that he intends to discuss the issue next week in Europe with Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik.
Carter said the US has agreed to support both sides as long as Turkey confines itself to securing its border area and doesn't move farther south.
