Polad Bulbuloglu nominated for post of UNESCO director-general

Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu has become a candidate for the post of the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Polad Bulbuloglu’s candidacy has already been officially submitted by Azerbaijan to the UNESCO Executive Board for consideration. 

The elections will be held this autumn.

The announcement was made by Azerbaijan’s permanent delegate to UNESCO, Anar Karimov, he said  that the Executive Board received the biography and discourse of the candidate. Bulbuloglu has presented his vision of the main tasks that stand before UNESCO and activity for the forthcoming four-year period.

Irina Bokova, born on 12 July 1952 in Sofia (Bulgaria) has been the Director-General of UNESCO since 15 November 2009, and reelected for a second term in 2013. She is the first woman to lead the Organization. Her tenure as the Director-General of UNESCO will expire this year. UNESCO rules do not allow the election of a senior official for more than two terms.

No later than April 1, the UNESCO Executive Board will notify the organization's participants of all submitted candidates, TASS reported.

In 2006, the former Azerbaijani Culture Minister (1988-2006) Polad Bulbuloglu was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Russia.
