The United States is deeply concerned about reports of the Iranian authorities’ violence against unarmed citizens during protests, U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo wrote on Twitter.
"We are deeply concerned about reports of Iranian regime’s violence against unarmed citizens. U.S. supports Iranian people’s right to protest against the regime’s corruption and oppression without fear of reprisal," Pompeo wrote. He called on Tehran to "respect human rights."
In spring, the decline in the value of the national currency caused a currency crisis in Iran. In recent days, the exchange rate of the Iranian rial on the black market has reached a record 120,000 for one US dollar, while at the end of May it was 65,000 rials per dollar. This triggered inflation in the country and higher prices for consumer goods and fuel, TASS recalls.
On August 1, the Iranian parliament gave the country's president Hassan Rouhani a month to report on the measures taken to overcome the economic crisis. Deputies, using their constitutional law, require a report on the regulation of commodity prices and the exchange rate, as well as measures to reduce unemployment and to end recession.
