Sources have confirmed security forces and members of the Revolutionary Guards were heavily deployed in nearby streets Khamenei’s residence.

They added that there were orders for military commanders to "take all measures to prevent the demonstrators from reaching the house of the Supreme Leader".

At least 12 people have been killed in anti-government protests in Iran and security forces have had to fight off "armed protestors" trying to take over police stations and military bases, reports in the country's state media suggest.Authorities had previously confirmed four deaths but the total is now believed to have risen after tens of thousands of people joined the protests, which began last week, the Independent writes.

The protests began in the north-east as an outcry against economic hardship and rising prices, but turned political in many places, with slogans chanted against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Hassan Rouhani and Iran's interventionist foreign policy in the region.

The apps Telegram and Instagram are currently banned in the country to "maintain tranquillity".
