Putin and Merkel discuss preparations for Normandy talks

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Government Spokesman Steffen Seibert said, adding that the two leaders had discussed the Ukrainian issue, the situations in Syria and Libya.

"As far as Ukraine is concerned, the parties agreed to continue preparations for a summit of the Normandy Four countries (Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine) in order to facilitate the implementation of the Minsk Agreements. They highlighted the need to step up talks on future gas transit agreements," Seibert pointed out.

The Kremlin press service said that Putin and Merkel have agreed that it is necessary to consolidate efforts to keep the Iran nuclear deal in place.

"The sides discussed the situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program," the press service said.

"They stressed the necessity to consolidate efforts of all the parties concerned to keep the JCPOA in place," TASS cited the statement as saying.
