Putin and Obama discuss a number of international issues

The Russian and the US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama spoke over the phone today, to discuss the bilateral relations and international issues, including the Middle Eastern settlement. The leaders talked about the situation in Syria, reaffirming their desire to contribute to the ceasefire, negotiated by Moscow and Washington, as well as allowing humanitarian access to certain areas.

The two parties stress the importance of inter-Syrian negotiations, held in Geneva, the Kremlin press office reports. "Presidents of Russia and the United States stressed the importance of inter-Syrian negotiations, held in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations, which should contribute to finding a political solution to the conflict," the reports says.

In addition, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama have agreed to work out additional measures for emergency response in case violations of the ceasefire agreement in Syria occur. "It was agreed to further increase the coordination of efforts between the two countries in Syrian, including between the special services and defense departments. For this purpose, additional measures for emergency response to existing violations of the ceasefire will be worked out," the report says.

Furthermore, Vladimir Putin pointed out the need for a speedy distancing of the moderate opposition from Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra, as well as for closing of Syria's border with Turkey, from where the influx of militants and supplies of arms to extremists continues.

American President thanked his Russian counterpart for Russia's help in providing assistance in freeing the US citizen in Syria. "Barack Obama thanked Vladimir Putin for the help Russia provided in freeing the American citizen Kevin Patrick Dawes in Syria," Kremlin's report says.

Vladimir Putin also spoke about the implementation of the Minsk agreements. He expressed hope that Kiev will begin to take specific steps for the implementation of the Minsk agreements. "During the conversation about the situation in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin expressed hope that, taking into account the formation of a new government in Ukraine, Kiev will finally start taking specific steps for the implementation of the Minsk agreements of February 12, 2015," RIA Novosti quotes the report.
