Putin and Trump to meet in July

Putin and Trump to meet in July

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump may meet in July 2017, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

He noted that there was nothing specific to report so far.

"There was talk of a possible meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump taking place before a G20 summit in July, but there was nothing specific to report so far," Reuters cited Peskov as saying.

On January 28, US President Donald Trump called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for the first time since his inauguration on January 20. Among the topics for discussion were issues concerning North Korea and Iran and problems of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

A member of the European Research Centre of the International Relations Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladimir Olenchenko, speaking to Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that it is not surprising that the meeting of the Presidents may not organized until July. "Although there is interest from both the Russian and the US sides in conducting the meeting, the new US administration has no people responsible for specific issues. Rex Tillerson was appointed Secretary of State recently, he has got no deputies yet," the expert drew attention.

"Presidents meet to reach any agreements. Usually, those persons that accompany heads of state are responsible for implementation of the agreements," Vladimir Olenchenko stressed.

At the same time, it will not be difficult to hold a meeting in Germany at the G20 summit, because it will be less global. "Traditionally, the meeting, which will take place at the G20 summer, is usually called "a meeting on the sidelines", as heads of state and government arrive to the summit to discuss common issues. A thorough discussion of the relations between the two countries requires a full day of talks," the member of the European Research Centre of the International Relations Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences concluded.

In addition, Vladimir Olenchenko listed the topics, which should be raised by Putin and Trump at their first personal meeting. "Objectively, it should be a normalization of bilateral relations. For example, they need to talk about the Ukrainian and Syrian crises, but most importantly - about the fight against terrorism," he noted.

"There are issues that concern purely bilateral relations. First of all, arms issues and limitation of nuclear weapons. Russia and the United States as the largest powers are responsible for it, and we need to come to an understanding in this direction," the expert pointed out.
