Russian President Vladimir Putin today congratulated the residents of Derbent on its 2000th anniversary.
"I congratulate you on this remarkable date, the 2000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Derbent, one of the oldest cities in Russia. Over the centuries the city has served as one of the most important key centers in the Caspian region. Located at the crossroads of civilizations, Europe and Asia, north and south, along the Great Silk Road, Derbent was a part of significant, truly epochal events, it played a significant role in the development of trade, science, culture and education,’’ the adviser to the President, Vladimir Tolstoy, read the message, RIA Novosti quotes.
