Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika may take up the position of the president’s envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"Chaika has received an offer to become presidential envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District," Peskov said, saying that the decree has not been signed yet.
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Chaika and Igor Krasnov, candidate for the post of Russia’s prosecutor general, yesterday.
Yesterday, Putin has suggested dismissing Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika due to his transfer to other work.Putin nominated Deputy Head of the Investigative Committee Igor Krasnov as a candidate for the post. The candidacy is approved by two relevant committees of the upper house, the submission will be reviewed at a session of the Federation Council on January 22.
The position of Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District is currently held by Alexander Matovnikov.
The senior research fellow at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations Ahmet Yarlykapov, speaking with the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that Yuri Chaika will strengthen the federal center's policy in the North Caucasus. "This decision indicates that the policy which has been started in Dagestan will continue towards the whole district, that is, appointing people from the center, putting things in order and putting corrupt officials in jail," he said.
