Railroad Worker Day celebrated in Russia

Today the railway workers of Russia are celebrating their professional holiday. Railway workers were the first in Russia to get their own professional holiday. Railroad Worker Day was established in 1896 by decree of the Minister of Railways of the Russian Empire, Mikhail Vilkov, and was the first professional holiday for railway workers not only in Russia, but also in Europe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his congratulations to workers and veterans of railway transport industry. “For almost 200 years, the history of Russia has been closely connected to development of railways, which linked it from the western borders to the Far East, becoming an important link in domestic transport infrastructure. Largely thanks to the great, dedicated work of your predecessors, thousands of kilometers of railroads have been built over the years," congratulatory telegram, posted on the Kremlin’s website, says.

President also praised the work of railway workers during international sports events and large-scale state construction projects. “Brilliant work during the World Cup, the XXIX World Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, opening of train traffic bypassing Krasnodar, construction of the highway to Crimea - these are just a few significant achievements of railway workers in recent years," Putin said.

In addition, head of state pointed out the importance of railway transport in the development of national economy and social sphere, as well as in ensuring communication between cities and regions of the country.
