Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan can settle border problems only through talks, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon said on Sunday in the city of Isfar located near the border with Kyrgyzstan.
Rakhmon stressed that the Tajik government is interested in the organization of talks on the demarcation of the state border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. "I would like to stress that the resolution of territorial and border issues, the agreement and demarcation of the state border is a very difficult process and requires a lot of time and efforts of specialists. Tajikistan is in favor of talks to find mutually beneficial solutions of the existing problems with due account of the national interests of both sides," he said.
According to the Tajik president, issues of border delimitation and demarcation are among the most important ones for Isfara residents. He recalled that Tajikistan has been negotiating border delimitation and demarcation with Kyrgyzstan since 2002. "The intergovernmental commission and working groups have held more than 170 meetings. As a result of the 20-year work a total of 663.7 kilometers out of the 987-kilometer-long border between the two countries, i.e. 68.4% of the borderline, have been agreed," Rakhmon said.
