Rami Meir passes away

Rami Meir, a well-known 60-year-old artist and songwriter from Baku, died in Moscow. In his works, he depicted the culture and life of the Mountain Jews.

Famous Baku artist Rami Meir, known for his works not only in Israel, but also in Russia, the US and other countries, died in Moscow. He was 60 years old.

Meir passed away three days before his birthday on April 11. The artist was born in Baku, but his ancestors came from Krasnaya Sloboda, where mountain Jews live compactly. As a student, he became interested in painting.

He emigrated to Israel in the 1990s, but maintained cultural and historical ties with Azerbaijan. The artist spent the last years of his life in Russia, being the chairman of the Union of Artists of Mountain Jews of the Russian Federation. Promoting the spiritual values of the Mountain Jews everywhere, Meir always noted that Azerbaijan is a place where multiculturalism and friendship of peoples are flourishing.

For several years, the artist worked on the series "Mountain Jews", collecting bit by bit the history of his people and researching it as a documentary historian. His works adorn private collections and museums not only in Israel and Azerbaijan, but also in Russia, the US and other countries.

Meir also wrote books and songs. He released two albums with composer Igor Timakov. In 16 songs out of 32 he was accompanied by the French State Orchestra.

The artist often paid attention to carpet art. In Russia and Israel, he managed to implement a number of projects with Azerkhalcha OJSC. In August last year, VDNKh hosted the exhibition "Rami Meir. Return 40 years later", which presented chased panels, paintings, carpets created by Rami Meir's paintings. Implemented in cooperation with the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Azerbaijan pavilion, the project was warmly welcomed by publicity.
