International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) President Tamas Ajan has given a "guarantee" that all lifters from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan will be handed a one-year ban from competition following Rio 2016.
The IWF adopted a policy last June stating any country with three or more positive tests from the past two Olympics would face a one-year suspension.
Ajan said the sanctions, which could include more than the three aforementioned countries, would be officially handed out in the coming months, the Washington Post reports.
The IWF already banned Russia and Bulgaria from competing in Rio, but Tuesday’s announcement calls into question the seven combined weightlifting medals won by Kazakhstan and Belarus at the 2016 Olympics.
