On the territory of the entire Union State, the Day of Unity of the Peoples of Russia and Belarus is celebrated. The holiday appeared after the signing in 1996 by the presidents of the two countries Alexander Lukashenko and Boris Yeltsin of an agreement on the formation of the Community of Russia and Belarus. A year later, on April 2, 1997, it was transformed into the Union of Russia and Belarus.
On December 25, 1998, the heads of state adopted the Declaration on the Further Unity of Russia and Belarus, the Treaty on Equal Rights of Citizens, the Agreement on the Creation of Equal Conditions for Economic Entities and the Protocol to it. And on December 8, 1999, in Moscow, Yeltsin and Lukashenko signed the Treaty on the Establishment of the Union State of Russia and Belarus, which entered into force on January 26, 2000.
