Russia marks Flag Day

Today residents of the Russian Federation honor one of main symbols of our country and our nation. Russian State Flag Day is marked on August 22nd.

The state flag of the Russian Federation traces its history back to 1668. It was born with the first Russian military and trade ships; and it was an element of the fleet culture till the 19th century. After 150 years of numerous changes of the state flag, the tricolor flag with a 300-year history became the symbol of Russia again in November 1990.

“The state flag is the most recognizable symbol of the Russian Federation, which is honored by our compatriots and all over the world. The flag belongs not only to the state, but to all Russian people. It makes us feel our involvement in the country’s fate, responsibility for all events at the local and federal level, a desire to participate in social initiatives,” Dmitry Shuvayev, a member of the General Board of the United Russia, said.

Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev is celebrating State Flag Day together with participants of the Iturup All-Russian Youth Educational Forum.

Young people unfolded a huge Russian flag on a shore of the Sea of Okhotsk and invited the head of the Russian government to participate in the ceremony of photographing the event. Medvedev accepted the invitation.

The Vice-Speaker of the State Duma, Sergey Zheleznyak, believes that the consolidation of Russian society under the country’s flag is very important nowadays. According to the MP, love for one's motherland, traditional values and devotion to historic roots should be formed in families with the support of society and the government.

A giant flag of Russia was unfolded on the central square of Crimea’s capital. This is a gift from Metropolitan Antonio of Mexico, Venezuela, Central America and the Caribbean Countries.

The length of the flag is 28 meters long, by 16 meters wide; it weighs 100 kg. It was made of Mexican silk. According to the initiators of the event, at the moment it is the biggest Russian flag in the history of Crimea. The head of Crimea, Sergey Aksenov, participated in the solemn ceremony of the flag’s unfolding.
