Russia needs deeper democracy, Valentina Matvienko says

Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matvienko noted a demand to deepen democracy is growing in Russia. She also pointed out that the laws that have been adopted in the Russian Federation in recent years do not restrict freedoms of citizens, but are aimed at enhancing security and strengthening stability in the country.

"In recent years we have adopted a number of legislative acts aimed at strengthening the protection of life and health of people, national interests of the country, its integrity, social and political stability," the head of the Federation Council said in an interview published in the Parliamentary Newspaper. The senator pointed out that among those laws, there is none, "which at least to a small extent limits the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens."
