Russia offers mediation in Azerbaijani-Armenian border demarcation talks

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov proposed on Moscow's mediation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border demarcation talks through the effort of a special joint commission.

"In line with a preliminary agreement between the sides, the Russian Federation offered its assistance to start and conduct delimitation, demarcation of the border, as it came up with an initiative to create a special joint Armenian-Azerbaijani commission, in which Russia could take part as a consultant or a mediator," Lavrov said at a press conference.

"We presume that all such incidents should be resolved exclusively by peaceful, negotiated means. As a long-term solution, we see the launch of the delimitation of the Azerbaijani-Armenian border with its subsequent demarcation. The Russian Federation is ready to continue in every possible way to contribute to the consistent normalization of the situation in the South Caucasus," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

During the telephone conversation with National Security Adviser to the President of the United States Jake Sullivan yesterday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stressed the delimitation of the border with Armenia must be conducted in accordance with the trilateral Karabakh statement, noting that Azerbaijan is "committed to ensuring peace and stability in the region."  Aliyev noted that Armenia's inadequate response to border tensions and attempts to internationalize the issue could lead to increased tensions in the region, and stressed the importance of peacefully resolving all disputes within the negotiation process.

Yerevan has not yet reacted to the proposal of Moscow and Baku.
