Russia was one of the countries that greatly helped Turkish democracy during the failed attempt of the military mutiny, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mevlut Cavusoglu, stated.
"Many countries have sent messages in support of democracy in Turkey, one of the countries that gave us the greatest support was Russia,’’ RIA Novosti leads his interview with the NTV channel.
The Foreign Minister added that the coup demonstrated vulnerabilities in the security of Turkey. "Even if there were only the coup attempt’s assumptions, the president should had been aware of this from the beginning," the diplomat said.
Cavusoglu said that the recent events have served as a lesson to Ankara, and promised that he would do everything possible so that Turkish citizens are no longer faced with similar threats.
The deputy chairman of the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party, MP Metin Kyulyunk, earlier expressed the opinion that one of the aims of the coup could be the destabilization of relations between Moscow and Ankara.
He explained that for the past three years some forces with great tenacity have taken steps to spoil the Obama-Putin-Erdogan equation. "Forces wanted to tear off Russia from Turkey, to destabilize the relations between Turkey and Russia. But it is undeniable that one of the factors of the coup attempt was those who are afraid of the stabilization of Russian-Turkish relations, taking into account the recent step of Erdogan towards Russia,’’ RIA Novosti quotes Kyulyunk as saying.
The MP added that the downing of the Russian Su-24 became a trap, and in fact, the preparation for the coup. The MP said that no country in the world is safe from uncontrolled mistakes in the domestic policy. "It happened previously in Russia, Turkey faced it on July 15th. The downed Russian plane and the coup attempt on July 15th are parts of one process,’’ Kyulyunk stressed.
In addition, some time ago information appear in the media that the Russian military warned the Turkish authorities of the impending mutiny attempt a few hours before it started. However, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said he could not confirm this information.
A meeting of the Russian and Turkish presidents, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is planned for early August. It will be held in Russia, the exact date is not known yet.
