The United States has sent an invitation to Russia to attend the inauguration of President elect Joe Biden scheduled for January 20 in the capital, the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C. said.
"We have received the invitation. Ambassador [of Russia in the U.S. Anatoly Antonov] is expected to take part [in the inauguration ceremony]," TASS cited the diplomatic mission as saying.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted in late November last year that Ambassador Antonov could attend the inauguration ceremony of the new U.S. president. However, the participation of foreign countries’ representatives at this event is not stipulated, he noted.
The U.S. presidential election was held on November 3. On December 14, the U.S. Electoral College convened and confirmed Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s election victory. Biden’s inauguration ceremony is due on January 20, 2021.
