Russia’s Lavrov and UN chief discuss Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres have discussed the process of reforming the United Nations on December 20, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

"They exchanged views on the UN reform process initiated by Guterres, expressing the common view on the need to reach balanced agreements relying on the broad consensus by all major groups of the organization’s member-countries," the ministry said.

Guterres said on numerous occasions that only a reformed UN can be the engine of the international community. He also expressed the view that the organization’s success strategy should be based on the simplification, decentralization, greater flexibility and the culture of transparency and responsibility, TASS reported.

Lavrov and Guterres have also discussed preparations for Astana meeting, Geneva talks on Syria and prospects of holding the Syrian National Dialogue Conference in Sochi.
