Sit-down protest against increases in electricity tariffs to be held in Yerevan

On Monday July 27 on Republic Square in Yerevan a sit-down protest demanding the abolition of the authorities' decision to increase tariffs for electricity in Armenia will be held. The action will start at 17:00 (MSK).

According to the council of the civil movement 'Rise, Armenia!' the event is being held in accordance with Article 24 of the law 'On freedom of assembly'. The civil movement 'Rise, Armenia!' took into account the statement by the head of information and public relations of the Armenian police, Ashot Aharonian, which implies that the police will now refrain from actions that unlawfully restrict the right of freedom of assembly," RIA Novosti cites a statement by the movement.

We remind you that the decision of the Commission on Regulation of Public Services (CRPS) to increase electricity rates by 16.7% from August 1st, adopted on June 17th at the request of the company 'Electric Networks of Armenia', sparked a protest that started in Yerevan on June 19th, and on the evening of June 22nd turned into a March on the presidential residence on Baghramian Avenue. The police dispersed the demonstrators on the morning of June 23rd. Nearly 240 people, including journalists, were taken to police stations, 25 people asked for medical help.

The movement 'Rise, Armenia!' demands a reversal of the decision of the CRPS to increase electricity tariffs before August 1st. In case the government fails to comply with their demands, the activists intend to continue the protests, particularly by blocking the main roads of the capital, seeking a cancellation of the decision.
