Speaker of Parliament heads Sri Lanka after president’s disappearance

Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, will become interim head of state. This decision was made by the leaders of political parties at an emergency meeting. During the meeting, they called for the resignation of the President and the Prime Minister.

”Urgent Party Leaders meeting on now at Speaker's official residence. Others including PM, AKD and Sumanthiran participated via Zoom. The consensus is largely for all to demand the immediate resignation of the President and PM. Speaker to take over per constitution,” head of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Party Rauff Hakim wrote on one of the social networks.
