Steinmeier: fight against terrorism requires coordination of Tehran and Riyadh

Iran and Saudi Arabia should abandon political differences for the sake of the joint fight against terrorism, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said at a meeting in Tehran with the President of the Expediency Council, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

"Political disputes over other issues should not stop the adoption of a joint policy for fighting terrorism, which can engulf any country," IRNA agency cited him as saying.

According to Steinmeier, the political differences between Tehran and Riyadh have contributed to terrorism in the region and if the two great Islamic countries coordinate with each other, other Muslim states will also abandon political disputes and stand united against terrorism," he believes.

In addition, the German minister stressed the importance of preserving the territorial integrity of Syria.

Steinmeier also held talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, TASS reports.
