The Supreme Mufti of Syria, Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, is grateful to Russia for the military operation in the country.
According to him, the Russian air operation in Syria is not being held in support of Assad or Putin, but in support of "all of us". "We are against dividing people into confessions," the mufti told a press conference in Moscow today.
Hassoun noted that "not only Syria and Iran would have been a target if Russia didn't take a firm position."
"When they say that Russia has come to Syria to support Shiites, we say that there are no Sunnis and Shiites in Syria, they are all citizens and Russia is protecting everyone," Interfax cited Hassoun as saying.
He said that the governments of Syria and Russia are open to dialogue with the opposition, but it is not interested.
