It is with great concern that we are following events as they progress, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili made a statement on the latest developments in Turkey.
"So far, no unrest has been detected in Northeast Turkey, a region bordering Georgia. The situation on our side is under control, and no risks are present. Airlines have cancelled flights. We have received phone calls from our compatriots aboard cancelled flights. Consequently, we are doing our best to maintain control. We have hotlines operating in both Istanbul and Tbilisi," the Prime Minister stated, Interpressnews reports.
Giorgi Kvirikashvili, together with his Cabinet members, is attending a Security Council meeting convened after a phone conversation with the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili. So far, the Prime Minister says, the Georgian side has no reason to be alarmed, though the latest developmentsin Turkey are unsettling indeed.
"We hope that things will soon settle down and go back to normal. We will keep our citizens updated. So far, no incidents have taken place on the Georgian side. The situation in Northeast Turkey, a territory bordering Georgia, is peaceful. So we have no reason to be alarmed. Border control measures have been enhanced. The border with Turkey is likely to shut down. In the foreseeable future, next steps, prudent measures, will be identified," the Prime Minister said.
