Truce in Syria set for next week

The truce in Syria is due to start next week, and the inter-Syrian talks may be resumed before the end of February. These are the main results achieved at the Munich meeting of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG).

Diplomatic delegations from Russia, the US, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, the UAE, the UK as well as the Arab League, the European Union and the United Nations attended the Munich talks.

"We have agreed to implement a nationwide cessation of hostilities in one week's time. Putting an end to the violence and the bloodshed is obviously essential," US Secretary of State John Kerry said at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the UN Secretary General's special envoy Staffan de Mistura.

According to him, that ceasefire will not be extended to Daesh, Jabhat al-Nusrah, and other affiliated organizations that have been recognized as terrorist organizations by the UN Security Council decision.

De Mistura acknowledged that it will not be easy to implement the ceasefire. "That is quite a challenge, quite a challenge for doing it in such a short period," he said.

The participants decided to establish a task force under the auspices of the UN and co-chaired by Russia and the United States. According to the Russian Foreign Minister, it will include diplomats and the military.

"Talks should resume as soon as possible without any ultimatums, without any pre-conditions and should include a wide range of opposition forces," TASS cited the Russian minister as saying.
