U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decree saying the United States recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, territory that Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.
The signing ceremony was held at the start of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Reuters reported.
"This was a long time in the making. Should have taken place many decades ago," the U.S. president said as he signed the document.
On March 21, Trump has announced on Twitter that the U.S. will recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
