Nabil Bazyush, president of the Council of the Tunisian Tourism Ministry, said that the government will allow Russian tourists to pay in rubles, RIA Novosti reports.
Hundreds of foreign tourists are refusing to vacate Tunisia or leave Tunisian hotels in light of the murders of around 40 people at the Imperial Hotel in Sousse in an attack by a local student. The Tunisian government called the terrorist attack a fatal blow to the national economy.
The tourism sector suffered losses after the murder of 22 people in the Bardo National Museum attack in March 2015. The sector lost 27% of its tourism income.
Tunisia generates about 20% of all income in foreign cash from tourists. About 500,000 people are directly and over 1 million are indirectly working in the tourism sector.
The ruble circulation initiative requires consultations with the Russian Central Bank and government. A similar initiative is active in Algeria.
