US President Barack Obama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to stand together against terrorism in the aftermath of the recent attack on a nightclub in Istanbul, the White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.
The two leaders held a phone conversation on Tuesday, the release stated. "The two leaders agreed that Turkey and the United States must continue to stand united in order to defeat terrorism."
Obama also welcomed Turkey's efforts to facilitate a nationwide ceasefire in Syria and a return to political negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition, the statement said.
US President offered his condolences for the 39 killed in the New Year's Eve attack on the Reina nightclub in Istanbul.
"Finally, the leaders discussed Cyprus and expressed hope that upcoming diplomatic engagements will result in an agreement to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation," the statement adds.
