Turkey announces three-month state of emergency

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a three-month state of emergency on Wednesday as part of an escalating response to last week’s failed military coup.

Erdogan said the aim was “to be able to take the necessary steps in the most effective and quickest manner to remove the threat directed against our country’s democracy, its state of law and our citizens’ rights and freedoms,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

In declaring a state of emergency, Erdogan cited Article 120 of the Turkish constitution.
